The Fire Chief is seeking an individual to perform various duties to include the ability to learn from and work at the direction of, and as a team member with, the Fire Department Mechanic. Performance of preventative maintenance activities on all of the Fire Department equipment presently under the control of the Fire Department, at the direction of the Department Mechanic. All repairs of a minor nature within the competence, ability and training and which do not require the acquisition of special equipment or tools, are to be the part-time Fire Department Equipment Mechanic’s primary responsibilities. However, the part-time mechanic shall use their own tools as reasonable and needed at no additional cost to the department. In addition, this employee will be required to prepare and maintain all necessary written records and documents concerning regularly scheduled maintenance for Fire Department equipment.

In addition to maintaining records, from time to time in the course of his duties, the employee will be expected to make recommendations to the Department Mechanic for the repair, replacement or new purchase of equipment which is unsafe, not repairable, or no longer useful for its intended purpose.

This is a part-time, non-exempt position.  $26.26 to $38.03 per hour.  Position closes 8/12/2025.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position.  The listed examples may not include all duties required by this position.

1. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with the City’s core values.
2. Preventative maintenance on all department equipment.
3. Prepare and maintain written records and documents concerning regularly scheduled maintenance on all department equipment.
4. Make timely recommendations to the Department Mechanic for the repair, replacement or new purchase of equipment which is unsafe, not repairable or no longer useful for its intended purpose.
5. Performs other related duties as required. The initial focus will be developing competency at servicing hydraulic generators, being responsible for seat repairs, maintenance and repair of the automatic tire chain systems, assisting with pump and aerial testing, and learning aerial service requirements and then completing that service work independently of the department mechanic when assigned. Also be responsible for the drop-off and return of Department vehicles from various off-site repair vendors.




KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Advanced knowledge of mechanical operations of pumpers, aerial devices, pumps, hydraulic systems and gasoline and diesel engines. Basic knowledge of firefighting duties, methods and techniques in relation to the operation of the equipment, are required. Skill in the operation of fire equipment and apparatus. Ability to work under physically and emotionally stressful situations. Demonstrated oral and written communications skills. Ability to follow oral and written orders, directions and instructions and abide by the rules and regulations of the department. Ability to work safely in changing work environments both inside and outside including exposure to various hazards including extreme temperatures, moisture and chemicals. Ability to lead and instruct others in techniques and methods used in various work activities. Ability to read schematic diagrams. Ability to write reports and maintain accurate records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public.

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or GED equivalent. Must have and maintain valid commercial vehicle operator’s license. Must be willing to attain the National Association of Emergency Vehicle Technicians Certification for Pump and Aerial Apparatus Mechanic.

Candidates will be subjected to criminal and financial background checks. Required to take and pass a physical exam after a conditional offer of employment, and annually thereafter.
