The Community Services Director is seeking 4 responsible individuals to be hired as a Truck Driver or Laborer.  Position is open until filled.  A breakout in duties and requirements are below:
 
  • Truck Driver: Candidates must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).  Full-time, 40 hour per week, non-exempt position.  $21.79 to $31.53 per hour.  

  • Laborer (CDL Pathway): Candidates must hold a valid operators driver's license and commit to obtaining a CDL within six months.  Full-time, 40 hour per week, non exempt position.  $20.29 to $29.32 per hour.


Truck Driver:

Performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation and preventive maintenance of heavy-duty trucks and similar equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, drainage systems, water mains, sewers and other public works projects, and in the performance of allied duties.  Employees of this class are also responsible for undertaking manual labor tasks associated with the operation of assigned equipment, such as the loading and unloading of materials and the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled work on construction and maintenance projects.

Performs a variety of routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties involving the construction and maintenance of water, wastewater, and street projects or involving highways, sidewalks and storm drainage projects.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in this class):
  • Operate dump, flat bed, or other trucks in picking up and delivering materials, debris, tools and supplies, and road maintenance and street construction work hauling cold patch, gravel, sand, and rocks.
  • Service vehicle with gas, oil, and water and performs minor maintenance work; notifies superior and mechanics of need of repair. Assists mechanics in repair of vehicles as necessary.
  • Streets: Perform various manual labor tasks such as assisting in street patching, laying pipe, helping with manhole maintenance, and picking up debris. Assist in storm drain construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Utilities: Installation, repair, maintenance, connections and flushing of water mains, pipes, gates and fittings; may change and repair water meters; flush hydrants and assist with water system operations. Installation, repair, maintenance, connections, jetting & rodding of sewer mains, manholes, pump stations; operate high pressure sewer jetting, cleaning and vacuuming truck; operate closed-circuit sewer inspection camera; and assists with sewer system operations.  
  • Seasonal duties include plowing snow, hauling snow and spreading sand/salt.  Also performs such tasks as cutting grass, cutting brush and raking.
  • Prepare trucks and equipment, on an emergency and seasonal basis, for snow removal and other seasonal cleanup operations.
  • Operate vehicles in such a manner as to maintain the mechanical and structural integrity of assigned vehicles in compliance with all laws, ordinances, policies and procedures at all times.
  • Perform heavy physical work under varying and adverse weather conditions.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in completing work assignments.
  • Supervise the work of unskilled and semi-skilled workers involved in routine road maintenance and construction activities, as may be assigned.
  • Occasionally operate heavy equipment as a trainee.
  • Maintain availability when requested to meet emergency situations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, other departments and agencies, and the general public.
  • Maintain familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated skill and experience in the operation and care of heavy duty trucks and related construction equipment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy duty construction equipment. Knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and safety procedures related to truck and heavy equipment operations. Ability to understand, follow and make oral and written instructions. Sufficient physical strength, conditioning and agility to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time under varying weather and climactic conditions.
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years’ experience in the operation and care of heavy duty trucks, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position. Must maintain valid New Hampshire CDL- B with Air Brake Endorsement and Tanker Endorsement, CDL-A with endorsements preferred.


Laborer:

Performs a variety of routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties involving the construction and maintenance of water, wastewater, and street projects or involving highways, sidewalks and storm drainage projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in this class):
  • Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling, raising old manhole covers and catch basins to road level for street reconstruction.
  • Streets: Perform general heavy laboring duties in assisting skilled and semi-skilled workers to remove trees, mix and pour cement, lay asphalt, patch streets, install and repair water and sewer lines, clear culverts, drains, roads and ditches, maintain park facilities, mow grass, clear weeds and brush, rake and pack leaves and debris, etc.
    Utilities: Provide assistance to install, repair, maintain, tap, clean and flush water mains, pipe, gates and fittings, and meters on mains and services and installation of services, fire hydrants and drinking fountains; assist in shutting off broken sections of water mains
  • Provide assistance with operation of jet truck, camera truck and other light and medium-sized construction and power equipment
  • Provide assistance with snow removal operations, either operating small trucks or sidewalk plows, or may serve as a wingman on plow.  Attach and remove snow plows, sanders, and associated equipment from vehicles.
  • Assists in other activities to mitigate conditions caused by extreme weather conditions, and natural and man-made disasters.
  • Operate and perform maintenance on hand tools and other machinery which may include, but not be limited to, mowers, brush cutters, chainsaws, weed whackers, etc.
  • Occasionally performs traffic control functions at job sites.
  • Operate trucks and motorized equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Available 24 hours per day to meet emergency situations as required.
  • Familiar with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Basic knowledge of and the ability to use simple hand and power tools.  Ability to perform simple and routine manual labor and perform one routine job for a prolonged period.  Sufficient physical strength, conditioning and agility to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse and varying weather and climatic conditions.
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent, and one year’s experience in construction, road maintenance or trade work, or and equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position.  Valid Operator’s license required, CDL-B license with air brake and tanker endorsement preferred.
