JOB SUMMARY: Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the operation and preventative maintenance of heavy-duty trucks and similar equipment at the City’s Recycling Center. Employees are also responsible for undertaking manual labor tasks associated with the operation of assigned equipment, such as loading and unloading of materials and the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled work on construction and maintenance projects.
This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. $22.03 to $31.82 per hour, and eligible for full time benefit offerings. Closing date May 13, 2025.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in this class):
1. Assist Solid Waste Coordinator and/or Solid Waste Assistant in daily recycling center operation.
2. Operate and maintain the roll off truck, emptying containers at various off-site drop off locations.
3. Perform various manual labor tasks in and around the Recycling Center.
4. Stock, deliver, and inventory City of Dover trash bags, recycling bins and bulky tags.
5. Maintain integrity and professionalism at all times when communicating with City residents and employees.
6. Operate construction debris scale when needed.
7. Prepare trucks and equipment on an emergency and seasonal basis for snow removal and other clean-up operations.
8. Operate vehicles in a manner as to maintain the mechanical and structural integrity of assigned vehicles in compliance with all laws, ordinances, policies and procedures at all times.
9. Perform heavy physical work under varying and adverse weather conditions.
10. Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
11. Understand and follow oral and written instructions in completing work assignments.
12. Occasionally operates heavy equipment as a trainee.
13. Maintain availability for emergency situations.
14. Complete and maintain records and reports as required.
15. Perform snow removal and sanding activities, assist in mitigating natural and man-made emergencies as needed.
16. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and agencies, and the general public.
17. Maintain familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
18. Perform other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in public works and utility construction, maintenance and repair activities. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time and in adverse conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the general public. Ability to work under adverse conditions.
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent. Two years’ experience working in the Recycling/Solid Waste field, OR any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid CDL-B license with air brake and tanker endorsement, OR must obtain one within 6 months of hire date. CDL-A with endorsements preferred. Possession of a valid NH Weigh Master License or must obtain one within 6 months of hire date. A valid NH Solid Waste Operator License required or must obtain one within 6 months of hire date. Possession of NH DES Solid Waste Facility Operators License, Step 1 or must obtain one within 6 months of hire date.
